1 SID FORUM INTERVIEW BY ANGELA ZAROO 14TH JULY 2014 LOOKING AT THE POST 2015 FROM AN AFRICAN PERSPECTIVE. INTERVIEW WITH BARTHOLOMEW ARMAH (UNECA). Looking at the African common position, the most critical issues for Africa are industrialization, science innovation and technology, people centered development, the environment and natural resource management, peace and security and financing and partnerships. Peace and security is one critical area where divergences of interests and positions are more likely to emerge at national level. Countries like Brazil and China for instance consider it as an internal issue that the global agenda should not step in.

3 IWACU ENGLISH NEWS WEBSITE Inequality issue in EAC The recent population’s census shows that the populations in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania are about184 million inhabitants. In 2030, there will be an increase of 100 million. Thus, it is urgent to improve the living conditions through developing the economy and facing all challenges in order to achieve the East African Community federation process. It’s high time all the EAC countries stood up and fought together for the best solution. According to the survey, Rwanda is the country where inequality is the most visible in EAC while in Burundi it is less visible. Aidan Eyakuze, Associate Regional Director of Society for International Development explains that the reason for this inequality is the fast economic evolution.

58 DAILY NATION NEWSPAPER, KENYA 02 DEC. 2013 (PG 12 EDITORIAL PAGE HARDCOPY NEWSPAPER DATED 05 DEC 2013) Kenya is a crazy place . . . until you take a second and much closer look In the last fortnight, two reports that, as a colleague likes to put it, are “full of soup” were published. One  “Exploring Kenya’s Inequality: Pulling Apart or Pooling Together? is by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and the Society for International Development. The other is The State of East Africa Report 2013, entitled “One People, One Destiny? The Future of Inequality in East Africa”by the Society for International Development’s Eastern Africa office. But perhaps the most brain-frying piece of data was in the SoEAR 2013. Citing a 2012 unpublished study by Akiba Mashinani Trust, it reports that 65 per cent of Nairobi’s population lives on just 1.62 per cent of the city’s total land area, made up of over 260 slums.

68 AFKInsider 25th DEC 2013 As EAC Integration Picks Up, Inequality Worsens Were the East African Community a single country today – which is the ultimate goal of the region’s integration process – the wealthiest 10 percent of the population would be two-and-a half times richer than the lowest-earning 40 percent. A report released in Dar es Salaam in November paints a gloomy picture of growing inequality between the haves and the have-nots in East Africa, and shows how this has resulted in increasingly negative perceptions of citizens against their governments across the region.
