Bull Fighting on Pemba Island -Tanzania
January 17, 2014
The island of Pemba is famed for traditional sport of bull fighting. Unlike its Spanish counterparts, this sport does not involve killing the bulls, but is a hangover from the days of Portuguese rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is an event that a whole village joins in and the bulls and matadors are spurred on by signing and beating the drums. There are no specific dates, but is often held to celebrate the end of the harvest (for which the island is famous for growing) or held on the Zanzibar Revolution Day.
